Canine Good Citizen The Canine Good Citizen™ program is dedicated to a better tomorrow for the dogs we love and to safeguard their future and the invaluable contribution thet make to our quality of life. This goal is to produce; - A dog you would like to own - A dog that you would welcome as a neighbour - A dog that can socialise with other dogs - A dog that can cope with the stresses of modern living - A dog that is accepted by the wider community - An owner fully informed on all aspects of responsible pet parenting! The purpose of the Canine Good Citizen™ program is to demonstrate that the dog as a companion pet can be respected and become a contributing member of the community. A dog can be trained and conditioned always to behave at home, in public places and in the presence of other dogs with an owner that is fully informed on all aspects of responsible pet ownership, i.e. dog behaviour, health care and grooming, road safety and dog laws. It is about dealing with the whole dog and its relationship with the owner as well as its relationship with other people, other dogs and the wider community. The program consists of 3 components: - Behavioural training using positive motivational methods - Education for Pet Owners (Canine behaviour, simple problem solving, first aid, general health care, grooming, environmental enrichment, dog laws) - Emphasis on training for 'real life' situations, socialisation, recreation and enjoyment of the dog. The Behavioural training component consists of; - Road safety - Walking without pulling - Accepting a veterinary examination & grooming - Well behaved socialisation with other dogs & people - Coming back to owner when called - Tolerating being separated from owner - Being approached and petted by a stranger - Showing confidence & control when faced with distracting or potenially frightening situations The Canine Good Citizen™ Program is designed to spread the message of the value of the human-animal bond and the importance of knowledgeable and responsible dog ownership; by example, by education, by service to the community. This program runs for 12 weeks and involves around 18 hours of training. This is a nationally recognised course that is assessed at a high standard. Successfull participants can purchase a C.G.C collar and leash, receive a personalised, signed certificate and are entiled to have C.G.C after their dogs name.
